The BEST deal in Boston for stocking up with fresh food is undoubtably Haymarket! This historic market place serves the best restaurants as well as you and me! Take a backpack and fill it with fruit and veggies for about 10$! We prefer the stalls on — street.
Bonus bargain: cycle, Blue Bike, walk or even drive (free parking in exchange for parking validation when you grab a coffee or snack inside the Boston Public Market)
After very careful price checks the best deal on supermarkets is Trader Joe, when compared to Whole Foods, Stop and Shop, Shaws, Star Market and even Market Basket. Trader Joe’s in Brookline sells alcohol (so offers a time saving as well as a dollar saving if you’re stocking up on food and alcoholic drinks)
Lidl is out of town so but worth a trip if you’re heading out of town with a car.
The best sportswear offer comes from a European brand named Decathlon, currently only online sales but excellent quality - check with a European friend or colleague and they will consistently be delighted when they discover the online option! www.decathlon.com
If you choose to go with the most classic Boston look for your sportswear or rainy/snowy city solution, LLBean is the well loved New England classic (think duck boots). The online sales give a great range (better than in store
IKEA A global phenomenon that is still gaining brand awareness in the US. Excellent quality, great customer service, the only affordable store that displays every item they sell, so you can test sofa, beds, chairs etc (unlike Wayfair, Amazon or Target).
When we moved to Boston we spent 6k on 2 beds, 1 sofa, 2 arm chairs, 1 dining table, 6 chairs, all our bedding, towels, everything for the kitchen (plates, pans, cutlery, knives) when we could have spent that on one sofa in some of the downtown stores (! I freaked out when I visited some of the furniture stores downtown)
MBTA weekend passes; for 10$ you can spend Saturday and Sunday exploring beaches, lakes, forests or small towns. Our faves MBTA adventure
Beaches: Rockport, Manchester-by-the-Sea (except the height of summer when the beach is for residents only (booo)
Towns: Concord, Hingham, Gloucester (with a walk to the beach)
Forests:
Flixbus gets you to and from New York with wifi, quicker and much cheaper than Amtrak
Flexcar delivers a car to your door for the same price as mainstream rentals (or collect the car downtown and save extra $s)
